Exam Invigilation
Exam invigilation is the supervision of candidates during a test to ensure they follow the rules and complete the assessment honestly. The invigilator monitors the testing environment, verifies candidate identities, manages the overall conduct and timing of the exam, and addresses any irregularities or disruptions that arise during the session, whether the test is held in person or online.
Exam invigilation is the traditional term for watching over an examination, widely used in education systems around the world. The invigilator is the person responsible for the smooth and fair running of a test. Their presence reassures honest candidates that everyone is held to the same standard and discourages anyone who might consider gaining an unfair advantage.
In a physical exam hall, invigilation involves a familiar set of duties. The invigilator checks that each candidate is who they claim to be, distributes and collects materials, keeps time, ensures the room is free of prohibited items, and watches for any behavior that breaks the rules. If a problem occurs, such as a disturbance or a suspected attempt to cheat, the invigilator manages it and records what happened so it can be dealt with appropriately afterward.
As testing has moved online, invigilation has taken on a remote form that mirrors these responsibilities through technology. A remote invigilator may observe candidates through their webcams and screens, verify identity digitally, and respond to issues in real time, or automated systems may carry out continuous monitoring with human invigilators reviewing anything unusual. The underlying purpose, maintaining fair and orderly conditions, stays the same.
Effective invigilation depends on attentiveness, consistency, and fairness. The invigilator must apply the rules evenly, distinguish genuine concerns from harmless actions, and treat every candidate with respect. Good record-keeping matters too, since clear notes about any incident support fair decisions if a result is later reviewed.
Whether conducted in person or remotely, exam invigilation is a cornerstone of assessment integrity. It is closely related to proctoring, and in many contexts the two terms are used interchangeably, both describing the supervision that gives an exam result its credibility. The word invigilation is more common in academic and examination-board settings, while proctoring tends to dominate in technology and certification contexts, but the responsibility they describe is the same.
