Human Proctoring

Human proctoring places a knowledgeable person at the center of exam supervision. In a traditional setting this is the invigilator walking through a hall, and in an online setting it is a proctor watching through a webcam and screen feed. In both cases the defining feature is that a human being is responsible for verifying identity, monitoring conduct, and interpreting what they observe.

The strength of human proctoring lies in judgment. People can read context, weigh circumstances, and distinguish an innocent action from a genuine concern in a way that software cannot reliably replicate. A proctor can also communicate with the candidate, answer procedural questions, offer reassurance, and resolve technical issues on the spot, all of which improve the testing experience and reduce unfair outcomes.

This approach is often preferred for examinations where the consequences are significant, such as professional licensing or admissions decisions. The presence of an accountable supervisor adds credibility, and the ability to intervene immediately means problems can be addressed before they affect the result. It also provides a clear point of responsibility, which can matter when an outcome is later reviewed.

The limitation is scale and cost. A human can only attend to a certain number of candidates at a time, so programs with very large volumes find purely human supervision difficult to sustain. Availability, training, and consistency across many proctors also require ongoing management.

Because of this balance, human proctoring is frequently combined with automated tools. Software handles the continuous, repetitive watching, while the human focuses on verification, decision-making, and candidate support. Within online assessment, this pairing lets programs keep the trustworthiness of human oversight while extending their reach to far more test-takers. The human element remains the part candidates trust most, which is why it tends to anchor the most consequential exams even as automation grows.
