Proctor

The term proctor comes from the long tradition of invigilation, where a trusted individual oversees an examination to keep it fair. In its classic form, a proctor is the person who supervises a test hall, checks identities, distributes materials, and watches for any conduct that breaks the rules. The core responsibility, ensuring the exam is taken honestly and by the right person, has remained constant even as the setting has changed.

In remote testing, the role of the proctor has expanded. It may still be a human who connects to a candidate's session over video and watches in real time, or it may be fulfilled in part by software that monitors the session automatically. Many programs use both, with technology handling continuous observation and a human proctor concentrating on verification, judgment, and support. In all of these forms, the proctor is the point of accountability for the integrity of the session.

A proctor's duties typically begin before the test starts, with confirming who the candidate is and, in remote settings, checking that the testing environment meets the requirements. During the exam, the proctor observes for anything that conflicts with the rules and responds appropriately, whether by issuing a warning, noting an event for review, or pausing the session. Afterward, the proctor or reviewer helps determine whether the session was completed fairly.

Good proctoring depends on judgment and consistency. A proctor must be able to distinguish ordinary behavior from genuine concern, apply the same standards to everyone, and treat candidates respectfully throughout. When software performs part of the role, the same principles apply, with human oversight reserved for decisions that carry consequences.

Across education, licensing, and employment testing, the proctor remains the figure, human or technological, that gives a result its credibility. The presence of a proctor is what separates a supervised, trustworthy exam from one taken without oversight.
