Secured Browser Environment

Secured Browser Environment (Browser Extension)

Definition

A Secured Browser Environment is an integrated software configuration, typically deployed via a lightweight browser extension rather than a standalone application download, that restricts a candidate's digital workspace during an online exam. It monitors and controls actions such as opening new tabs, copying and pasting, taking screenshots, or accessing unauthorized websites, ensuring the assessment takes place within a controlled digital environment without requiring candidates to install intrusive software on their personal devices.

Traditional exam security often relied on a dedicated lockdown browser, a heavy, standalone application that candidates had to download, install, and launch separately, one that took broad control of the operating system. These legacy tools provided security at the cost of significant technical friction, frequently triggering firewall blocks, causing compatibility issues on personal devices, and generating support requests immediately before high-stakes exams.

Proctor360's Secured Browser Environment replaces this approach with a streamlined alternative delivered through a lightweight browser extension. Candidates add the extension to their existing browser, complete their exam within the secured environment, and remove the extension when finished. There is no separate application to install, no deep operating system access required, and no device-level interference after the session ends.

Within the exam session, the secured environment actively restricts the digital avenues a candidate might otherwise use to gain an unfair advantage. It blocks attempts to open new browser tabs, restricts copying and pasting of exam content, prevents screenshots and print commands, and detects unauthorized screen sharing or secondary displays. These controls shut down the most common digital routes to misconduct, accessing external resources, sharing question content, or receiving assistance through messaging or collaboration tools, while leaving the candidate's broader device experience undisturbed outside of the exam window.

The extension-based model offers meaningful benefits for accessibility and system compatibility. Because it operates within the browser rather than at the operating system level, it is less likely to conflict with institutional firewalls, VPN configurations, or accessibility tools that candidates depend on. It also lowers the technical barrier for candidates using personal or shared devices who cannot or should not install heavyweight software.

The Secured Browser Environment is designed to work in concert with Proctor360's physical monitoring layers. While the extension secures the digital interface, the platform's webcam proctoring, identity verification, and multi-camera configurations monitor the candidate's physical space. Together, they create a comprehensive security boundary that addresses both the screen and the room, neither layer alone is sufficient for high-integrity remote assessment, but in combination they cover the full spectrum of risk.
