Job Analysis

Definition

Job analysis is the structured study of a role to document the tasks, responsibilities, skills, and conditions it involves. In assessment, it provides the evidence base for building valid, job-related tests, ensuring that what an exam measures genuinely reflects the demands of the work a candidate is being evaluated for.

Job analysis is the foundation of fair, defensible assessment for work. Before an organization can test whether a candidate is suited to a role, it must first understand what that role actually requires. Job analysis answers this by systematically gathering information about the duties performed, the knowledge and skills needed, the tools used, and the environment in which the work takes place.

The process draws on several methods. Analysts may observe people doing the job, interview experienced workers and supervisors, distribute structured questionnaires, or review existing documentation about the role. The aim is to move beyond assumptions and produce an accurate, evidence-based picture of what success in the position demands.

The results feed directly into assessment design. By identifying the competencies that genuinely matter, job analysis ensures that a test measures relevant abilities rather than incidental ones. This is essential for validity, the principle that an assessment should measure what it claims to, and for fairness, since job-related criteria reduce the risk of screening candidates on factors unrelated to performance.

Job analysis also supports the credibility of high-stakes decisions. When a hiring or certification test is challenged, documented job analysis provides the rationale linking the assessment to real work requirements, which helps demonstrate that the evaluation was reasonable and defensible.

In the wider landscape of online assessment, job analysis underpins the content that proctoring and exam security then protect. Secure delivery ensures a test is taken honestly, but it is job analysis that ensures the test is worth taking in the first place, measuring the right things for the right reasons across recruitment, certification, and workforce development. As roles change with technology and new ways of working, job analysis is also revisited over time, so that assessments stay aligned with what the work actually demands rather than drifting toward outdated criteria.
