Year-Round Testing

Definition

Year-round testing, also called continuous or on-demand testing, lets candidates take an exam at any time of their choosing rather than only during fixed, scheduled windows. Enabled by online delivery and remote proctoring, it offers candidates flexibility and convenience, while requiring strong exam security to protect question content that is exposed to many test-takers over a long, open period.

Year-round testing describes a delivery model in which an exam is available continuously rather than only on set dates. Traditionally, many programs ran tests during defined windows, gathering candidates into the same period. On-demand testing instead allows a candidate to schedule and sit the exam whenever it suits them, which online delivery and remote proctoring make practical at scale.

The appeal is flexibility. Candidates can test when they are ready rather than waiting for the next window, which suits working professionals, international participants, and anyone whose schedule does not align with a fixed date. For programs, continuous availability can smooth demand, shorten the time to certification, and improve the overall candidate experience.

This flexibility comes with a distinct security consideration. When an exam is open for a long period, the same questions are exposed to many candidates over time, raising the risk that content could be shared or memorized and passed on. Programs that test year-round therefore lean heavily on protective measures to keep results trustworthy.

Those measures typically include large question banks and randomization so that candidates do not all see the same items, regular refreshing of content, and strong proctoring and identity verification for every session. Together these offset the higher exposure that continuous availability creates.

Within online assessment, year-round testing reflects a broader shift toward candidate-centered, flexible delivery. It depends on robust exam security to remain credible, which is why it is so closely tied to proctoring, question randomization, and item-bank management; the convenience it offers is only valuable if the integrity of the result is preserved throughout the open testing period. Programs that move to continuous delivery therefore tend to invest more heavily in item development and monitoring than those running occasional windows, treating that ongoing investment as the necessary price of the convenience and flexibility their candidates have come to value and expect.
