Video Proctoring
Video proctoring supervises an online exam by recording or streaming continuous video of the candidate through their webcam. The unbroken footage captures the candidate and their immediate surroundings for the full duration of the session, allowing either real-time observation by a proctor or detailed later review to confirm that the test was completed without assistance, impersonation, or other rule violations.
Video proctoring is the most thorough form of visual monitoring in remote testing. Unlike periodic snapshots, it captures an unbroken view of the candidate throughout the exam, so there are no gaps in the record. This continuous coverage gives supervisors and reviewers a complete picture of what happened, from the moment the test begins until the candidate submits.
The video can be used in different ways depending on the program. A proctor may watch it live and respond as events unfold, or the footage may be recorded and examined afterward, often with automated tools highlighting the segments most worth reviewing. In either case, the recording documents the candidate's presence, attentiveness, and surroundings in detail, making it a strong source of evidence.
Because it leaves little uncovered, video proctoring is well suited to high-stakes examinations where the integrity of the result must be defensible. If an outcome is challenged, the footage provides a clear, reviewable account of the session. It also captures behaviors that briefer methods might miss, such as repeated glances off-screen or the brief appearance of another person.
The cost of this thoroughness is technical and practical. Continuous video requires reliable bandwidth and substantial storage, and the resulting recordings contain sensitive personal data that must be protected and retained responsibly. Candidates with weaker connections or privacy concerns may need accommodation, and programs should be transparent about how footage is used.
In the layered model of exam security, video proctoring usually anchors the visual component and works alongside audio analysis, screen monitoring, and identity verification. Together these elements give online assessments the confidence of in-person supervision while preserving the flexibility that makes remote testing valuable.
